Metal fixators made of titanium and its alloys stand out currently as the gold standard to be used for treating bone fractures. This study implied assessing the toxicological aspect of an innovative nickel-titanium alloy based osteoplastic material enriched with silver (0.3 % and 0.5 %). There was an experimental evaluation carried out, which included tests of acute and subchronic toxicity, pyrogenicity, as well as local irritant effects, compared with a pure nickel-titanium alloy. There was no mortality, behavioral deviations, altered body weight, or any other significant alterations in the animals’ physiology registered. A histological examination of the implantation site pointed at developing mature connective tissue featuring no signs of inflammation nor allergic reaction. The tested material demonstrated neither local irritant nor pyrogenic effects. These findings serve proof to the fact that the nickel-titanium alloy containing silver proved to be biologically safe through the preclinical experiments, which reasonably suggests that it should be studied further to be potentially employed as an osteoplastic material.
