The study was held to evaluate the impact of hypothyroidism on the clinical course of metastatic renal cancer. The study included 67 patients with a verified diagnosis of clear cell renal cancer who received specialized antitumor therapy. The thyroid status was assessed prior to and after the respective treatment; the median follow-up period was 24.7 months. Patients who developed hypothyroidism, had their median overall survival rate significantly above that of those with normothyroidism (p=0.004). The one-year survival rate, too, proved to be higher in the hypothyroidism group (p=0.009). Given the above, the development of hypothyroidism could be considered an independent predictor of a favorable prognosis.
