The study focused on the role of free-radical processes in the development of periodontitis infected with antibiotic-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus. At the initial stages of periodontitis, a high level of superoxide anion was detected, which triggers a cascade of biochemical processes and leads to activated cellular immunity. A study of the dynamics pertaining to the changes in the content of beta-defensin in periodontal tissues during the inflammatory process caused by infection with antibiotic-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus showed that from the beginning of the experiment until Day 20, the content of beta-defensin in the inflammation focus went up significantly. This dynamic correlated with superoxidanion formation in the focus of inflammation, and with histological changes when the periodontal tissue was infected.
