Doctor in the Caucasus in the second half of the XIX century

[Reviews]
Andrey Kartashev;

The article analyzes information about doctors who served in the North Caucasus and Transcaucasia in the second half of the XIX century. The research materials are presented by archival sources from the funds of the Russian State Historical Archive (St. Petersburg) and the State Archives of the Stavropol Territory. The analysis and synthesis of information conducted using the historical-systemic, historical-typological and historical-comparative methods of research made it possible to establish that, in spite of the creation of Zemstvo medicine in the Russian Empire and the introduction of social principles into the national health care, the doctor in the Caucasus continued to be an official at the service (military and civil). Due to the proximity of the region to theaters of military operations, the doctors were participants in various wars, served at customs outposts under quarantine. The obtained results allow to draw a conclusion: in the depths of «bureaucratic» healthcare in the Caucasus a public doctor was born who was able to conduct a dialogue with his colleagues at meetings of medical societies and at congresses in the interests of solving the most pressing problems facing the medicine.
