Magnetic resonance sialography alternative method for the study of diseases of the parotid salivary glands

[Stomatology]
Boris Arutiunian; Marina Kozlova; Aleksandr Vasilyev;

Existing methods for the diagnosis of non-neoplastic diseases of the large salivary glands (BSG) do not meet all the requirements of the dentist. In 60 patients – 50 women and 10 men aged from 25 to 70 years with parenchymal sialadenitis, the effectiveness of magnetic resonance sialography (Mr-sialography) was evaluated on a device with a power of 3.0 Tesla. The MR-sialography technique with stimulation of salivation and obturation of the orifice of the duct allows visualization of the main duct and the system of intra-ferrous ducts of the parotid salivary glands to the second order, as well as to identify cystic lesions of the parenchyma. When diagnosing parenchymal sialadenitis, the method has a sensitivity of 97.7 %, an accuracy of 96.6 %. The specificity was 93.3 %. MR-sialography allows to obtain a high-quality image, visualizing the ductal system and the parenchyma of the parotid salivary glands as a single whole and simultaneously from two sides.
