The functions inherent to the rectum and its sphincter apparatus were evaluated in patients who underwent abdominalanal resection of the rectum (AARR). The study included 20 patients with rectal cancer who were undergoing AARR. In all patients more than a year has passed after the operation. Evaluation of functional results was performed using the
questionnaire. For an objective assessment of colorectal functions, a computerized device «Kolodinamik-3» (Russia) was used.
According to the results of the questionnaire, unsatisfactory results of evacuation and obturative functions were identified in the majority of patients. More than a third have pronounced disorders of reservoir-accumulative function, in another half of patients, these disorders are less significant. The objective assessment of the obturator function indicates a low tone of the internal anal sphincter and external anal sphincter in most patients. In the fistula zone, in most patients, a rough cicatricial stricture was determined, which deforms the anal canal, disrupts the natural passage of intestinal contents and does not allow adequate control of the anal sphincter and retention of feces and gases. Thus, the majority of patients undergoing AARR, have pronounced disorders in evacuation and obturative functions.
