Prognostic value of vascular endothelial growth factor in patients with mitral valve prolapse and connective tissue dysplasia

The aim was to evaluate the predictive value of vascular endothelial growth factor type A (VEGF-A) and its receptors – VEGF-R1 и VEGF-R2 – for cardiovascular events in patients with mitral valve prolapse and connective tissue dysplasia.
83 patients (61 men, 22 female, aged 21.93±4.22 years) with primary MVP were enrolled in the study. Follow-up period was 3 years. Circulated VEGF-A, VEGF-R1 и VEGF-R2 levels were determined once at baseline. All cardiovascular clinical and instrumental outcomes during 3 years of observation considered as endpoints.
At baseline VEGF-А ≤197.3 pg/ml, VEGF-A/VEGF-R1 ≤ 0.65, VEGF-A/VEGF-R2 ≤ 0.007 were associated with the increase of mitral valve prolapse degree, left ventricle myocardium mass index, and also with clinically significant arrhythmias.
Complex of indicators (reduced VEGF-A, VEGF-A/VEGF-R1, VEGF-A/VEGF-R2) is an independent predictor of structural and functional changes of cardiovascular system in young patients with mitral valve prolapse.
