Particularity of the clinical course and quality of life of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on the background of the metabolic syndrome

In 100 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the features of the clinical and functional status and quality of life were studied depending on the presence or absence of the metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed in 70 % of patients. In patients with COPD and metabolic syndrome, the frequency of exacerbations and hospitalizations, the severity of dyspnoea, cough and sputum were significantly higher, and spirometry parameters, exercise tolerance and quality of life were lower than in patients without metabolic syndrome. More severe course of COPD identified in the presence of comorbidity requires the development of individualized pulmonary rehabilitation programs, taking into account the concomitant pathology.
