The review aims to combine observational and research data on cough in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Chronic cough may be the first symptom of COPD, which is often ignored by patients. People with a chronic cough, yet featuring no signs of airway obstruction, belong to a high-risk group for COPD, the detection of which will become the basis for timely prevention of the disease. According to respective research, cough is considered not only as a symptom, but also as an independent risk factor for an unfavorable COPD outcome. Identification of the cough phenotype of COPD will allow identifying patients with an increased risk of an unfavorable course of the disease and to carry out early correction of therapy.
