A retrospective comparative study of the effectiveness of non-selective β-blockers (n=104) and endoscopic ligation of varicose veins (n=82) in the primary prevention of esophageal bleeding and an assessment of the effect of these methods on the survival of patients with severe forms of ascites and varicose veins who had no episodes of bleeding before inclusion in the waiting list for liver transplantation. There were no significant between-group differences in clinical, laboratory, and demographic parameters, MELD scores, and Child-Turcotte-Pugh cirrhosis grades, rates of medium to large varices, and rates of severe ascites. There were no significant differences in the incidence of bleeding in the compared groups. Survival of patients in the compared groups did not have a significant difference
