[History of medicine]
Andrey Kartashev;
The legislative provisions governing medical service in quarantine institutions of the Russian Empire at the beginning of the 19th century are analyzed: the arrangement of quarantines, their staff, and the responsibilities of medical officials. The memoirs of an English officer undergoing quarantine control at the village of Sredny Yegorlyk are cited and analyzed. Based on archival documents, the structure of the institutions of the Caucasian Quarantine Line, the turnover of medical personnel, and examples of the career of doctors are given. Analysis and synthesis of information using historical-systemic and historical-genetic methods recreate a holistic picture of the work of medical personnel in the system of quarantine outposts in the North Caucasus. It is concluded that for its time, the quarantine line was a serious barrier to prevent spreading of infectious diseases, although many activities were carried out in violation of the established rules.
