Modern possibilities of prediction of clinical course and outcome of pulmonary embolism

The key point in treatment strategy of pulmonary embolism (PE) is risk stratification. The algorithm of risk stratification, recommended by the European Society of Cardiologists (2014), has a number of shortcomings regarding the identification of patients with intermediate-high risk of death. In this regard, search of new predictors of PE-complications is still actual. We present review of promising clinical, laboratory and instrumental predictors, clinical scores and prognostic models that can improve risk stratification. Moreover, we provide information about fatty acid-binding protein, the promising laboratory marker of RV myocardial injury in patients with PE.
