Effect of pinealectomy and melatonin on rat learning in the modified water maze

The removal of the epiphysis makes it difficult to train the avoidance response in rats in Morris’ modified water maze. Animals make more mistakes and spend more time searching for a rescue site. Epiphyseal hormone melatonin (0.1 mg / kg) with chronic administration facilitated the acquisition of an avoidance skill. It is assumed that melatonin can act as a natural nootropic agent that improves the cognitive activity of the brain.
