Clinical significance of visceral fat deposits

The clinical significance of visceral fat deposits (epicardial fat thickness (EF), intraabdominal fat thickness (IAF), interatrial septum lipomatosis thickness (IAS) and its interrelations with waist circumference, body mass index, blood lipids profile and carbohydrate metabolism was studied in 803 patients with metabolic syndrome. Positive correlation of all fat deposits with the waist circumference was found. The IAF thickness correlated with myocardial hypertrophy, dilatation and diastolic dysfunction of the left ventricle (LV), carbohydrate metabolism and respiratory function disorders. The EF thickness was associated with myocardial hypertrophy, while the IAF lipomatosis correlated with diastolic dysfunction of the left ventricle and supraventricular extrasystolia. Therefore, the investigation of the visceral fat deposits severity in patients with metabolic syndrome allows revealing the risk of somatic pathology.
