Ultrasonography data on the angle between posterior surfaces of the manubrium and body of the sternum in infants

Ultrasonography was used to detect the internal angle of the sternum in 43 children (22 boys and 21 girl) at the age from 1 to 3 years, subdivided into 3 groups according to age. Each age-based group included subgroups of boys and girls. It has been established that the internal angle of the sternum in infants is 164.65±0.83°, and its value is age-independent. Internal angle of the sternum in infant boys equal to 162.59±1.25° is statistically significantly lower than in girls where it is 166.8±0.88°. Therefore, boys (especially under three years) may exhibit larger reclination of the sternum than girls, which consequently may cause transplant compression with higher probability. The sweep of
the internal angle of the sternum reaching 24° indicates individual character of manubrium reclination in infants independently from their sex or age.
