The role of melatonin for physiology and pathology of an eye

The main hormone of pineal gland – melatonin, is widely provided in all structures of an eye, and first of all in a retina. The high density of specific melatonin receptors is also defined here. Based on the recent data, in this review the role of melatonin in physiology and pathology of the visual system and perspective of its therapeutic potential in ophthalmology is discussed.
